Africa Foundation has been collecting
children from the streets and guiding them into a home
and education since 1971, since then over 6000 children
have benefited from this program alone. For several
years Africa Foundation was the only organisation in
the country dealing with street children.
We have a school called
Rookmaaker School where there are 420 former street
children, orphaned children or marginalised children.
We work on self-sustaining projects that bring in the
funds to ensure the children, in both Africa Foundation
and other indigenous children’s charities, have
access to their basic necessities. The projects include
farming projects, an Aloe Vera Farm, Pig Farm and Poultry
farm and Craft making projects.
Our work increases the capacity of Africa Foundations
work and the amount of children that indigenous charities
are able to care for. It transforms the culture of dependency
within indigenous charities into an empowering state
where they are self-sustaining and no longer perpetual
beggars.
The self-sustaining projects also provide the children
with vocational training so they gain skills that will
assist them in life outside the home. The skills include
farming, craft making, and carpentry, skills that most
children would learn from their family.
